Description
Most anatomy and physiology resources focus primarily on the physical and medical perspective. Others focus on energetic or emotional aspects. Rarely do the two speak to each other. Anatomy and Physiology: a Holistic Approach brings these perspectives together in one coherent framework — a way of studying the body that respects both science and the more subtle dimensions of health, without losing either. Introduction – keep it simple. This book gives an overview of anatomy and physiology from a ‘holistic’ perspective. As well as considering the body in terms of its ‘nuts and bolts, how they link and ‘work’ together and what happens when things go wrong, it includes a reference to associated energetic, mental and emotional imbalances and gives some self-help suggestions. For example, age-related diabetes. In addition to considering the condition in terms of sugar metabolism, a holistic perspective includes reference to issues such as: – the metaphorical message of the problem e.g. ‘Where is the sweetness in my life?’; – energetic blocks in the Sacral Chakra and issues around self-respect and creative expression; – emotional stress associated with energy flow, particularly in the Spleen and Stomach Meridians; – lifestyle issues including diet, exercise, strategies for reducing stress and useful supplements. For each of the body systems, this book therefore considers: – an overview of the nature and function of the related tissues and organs; – what can ‘go wrong’ physiologically as well as on emotional, mental and energetic levels; – practical ways of addressing the imbalances including dietary support and life style changes. These aim at working with the problem to help alleviate the symptoms and prevent their progression and, more importantly, to stimulate the body’s own innate healing processes. The overall aim of the book is to keep it simple in order to ‘see the wood for the trees’ – a difficult task, given the number of new theories which constantly appear. The brief overview of each organ and system can be amplified by reference to more detailed texts and to the new ideas which emerge daily from current research.
