Description
We are quite good at praying about the big things in life.
Illness. Bereavement. Family crises. Trouble. Need.
But what about the smaller things?
The sharp comment we did not need to make. The resentment we have supposedly forgiven. The gossip conveniently renamed “concern”. The apology that still contained a defence. The good deed we performed—and then quietly admired ourselves for performing.
The Book of Uncommon Prayer is a collection of 135 short, honest prayers about the ordinary misdemeanours of the human heart: pride, envy, irritation, distraction, worry, stubbornness, self-importance, and all the other things we are remarkably good at explaining away.
The tone is playful, but the purpose is serious. These prayers are intended to make us smile, recognise ourselves, and then perhaps pause long enough to speak honestly to God.
Because mercy makes honesty possible.
For naughty boys and girls of all ages.
