Description
John Francis Campbell of Islay, the collector of the Popular Tales of the West Highlands, gathered here every Gaelic ballad of the Fenian cycle he could find in manuscript and oral tradition, from the Book of the Dean of Lismore (1512) to the reciters he heard himself, with lists of collections and an account of the documents quoted. The Gaelic texts were printed for the author by Spottiswoode in 1872; this volume is the standard source for the ballads behind Macpherson’s Ossian. Reproduced in A4 so that the small type of the original remains readable. This is a faithful print-on-demand facsimile of the 1872 edition, reproduced in full from a library copy. The historical text is reproduced without modification; only the format, margins and legibility have been reset for modern printing.
