Alan Hargrave meets many people, typically in their 50s, who are frustrated, disappointed, exhausted, cynical or even embittered. These are often people who, thirty years ago, were committed, enthusiastic and ready to change the world. Yet now the light has gone out of their eyes and they are hanging in for a pension. At the other end of the scale, are those in their 20s, juggling the competing demands of work, ambition, finances, mortgage, relationships with partner and bringing up kids. For such people church can often be bad news rather than good news, since, in a tight schedule where there is no slack, it demands yet more of our time to attend meetings and sit on committees. The purpose of this book is to help us think through the pattern of our living in order to find a ‘Rule’, a way of living, that will not just sustain us, but allow us to look beyond ourselves, to make a difference, and to have a life ourselves.
