Description
Henri-Delmas de Grammont (1830-1892) spent his life in Algiers and its archives, and this is the book in which he gathered what he had found: three centuries of the Regency, from the arrival of the corsair brothers Aruj and Hayreddin Barbarossa in 1515 to the French landing of 1830. Pashas, aghas and deys, the corsair fleet and the trade in captives, the bombardments and treaties with the European powers — told from consular papers, chronicles and the records Grammont had read himself. It remained for generations the reference history of the Turkish period in Algeria. This is a faithful print-on-demand facsimile of the 1887 edition, reproduced in full from a library copy. The historical text is reproduced without modification; only the format, margins and legibility have been reset for modern printing.
