Description
Pedro de Cieza de Leon (c. 1520-1554) went to the Indies as a boy and spent seventeen years in Peru, writing down what he saw and what the men who had made the conquest told him. The War of Las Salinas is his account of the first of the civil wars that set the conquerors against one another: the quarrel of Pizarro and Almagro over Cuzco, the battle of 1538, and the executions that followed.Sir Clements Markham (1830-1916), president of the Royal Geographical Society and the Hakluyt Society’s most prolific editor, translated the text and furnished it with an introduction, notes, three appendices and a full index. His version remains the one through which English readers know the book. This reprint is a complete facsimile of the Hakluyt Society edition (second series, no. LIV, London, 1923, printed by W. Lewis at the Cambridge University Press), with the Council list, the contents, the errata, the note of dates and the index. The page is reproduced by image, without resetting the type.
