Description
Past the basic tactics.
200 chess puzzles taken from real games, for players who are comfortable spotting the obvious tactics and want positions that take a little more work.
The winning move is not always the first one you see. You may need to try a few combinations before the idea becomes clear. The puzzles are mixed rather than grouped by type, so there is no hint about what kind of tactic is coming.
Each puzzle has its own page, with ruled space underneath to write out your move and your opponent’s reply in pencil. The aim is not just to find a good move, but to work out what happens next.
Answers come after every nine puzzles, close at hand rather than hidden at the back. Try to solve a whole batch before checking. The difficulty is shown with the answer rather than the puzzle, so you have to judge each position for yourself. Every solution has been checked with Stockfish, a powerful chess engine.
The solutions also show you the tactical motifs involved using labelled tags, with the terminology explained in the glossary. Over time, this helps you recognise patterns you have seen before and build up a larger tactical toolkit.
A compact book for a train journey, lunch break, or a quiet half hour at home.
