Nobody doodles on a blank page. They fill in the O in a word that is already printed. They go over a line that is already there. They make a box dark. So every page in this book has something on it already — a start, made for you.

A word from the Little Signals stories to colour in, with a few of its holes already done. A big thing from one of the books to make dark: the pot with its crack still showing, the door, the boot, the sleepy stone, the storm. A page of bubbles with some already filled — solid, hatched, dotted, cross-hatched, so there is more than one way and no right one. A line to go over, and over. Shapes to close. A pattern to carry on. A spiral to follow in. And then a page with nothing on it but a bean.

The pages come round in that order seven times. Fast first, then slow, then still. That is not a design choice. It is the order a body comes down in.

Two of the pages are already a mess, on purpose — one scribbled dark in the corner (this one is already a mess. you cannot spoil it), one with loops that run off the edge of the paper (go off the edge. the page does not mind). A tidy book teaches tidiness. These two teach that nothing here can be failed.

There are no instructions and no right answers. You can do the thing, or your own thing, or nothing at all. Even the words at the bottom of every page are outline letters, so those are for colouring in too.
