The teacher says they are a delight. The childminder says no trouble at all. Then the front door closes and everything arrives at once.
After the Day is a story about that. About the effort of holding yourself together somewhere that is not home, and what has to happen when you finally reach the one place it is safe to stop.
It reframes the after-school collapse as something other than bad behaviour — both for the child living it and the grown-up meeting it in the hallway at half past three. Holding on all day is work. The falling apart is what comes after work.
For the adults who get the hardest hour and none of the credit.
