Description

Antonio Enríquez Gómez was a converso poet and dramatist who left Spain ahead of the Inquisition — which burned him in effigy in 1660 — and wrote from France under his own name and under others. La culpa del primero peregrino takes Adam as the first pilgrim and his fall as the first exile, which in the hands of a man who had lost his country is not an abstract subject. Printed at Rouen by Laurens Maurry and dedicated to the Duchess of Orleans, it is Spanish literature written outside Spain because it could not be written inside it. This is a faithful print-on-demand facsimile of the 1644 Rouen edition, reproduced in full from a library copy. The historical text is reproduced without modification; only the format, margins and legibility have been reset for modern printing.
