Description
Claude Joseph Dorat (1734-1780) set out, in three cantos of verse, what the actor owes to the text, to the gesture and to the voice. The poem is preceded by a discourse in prose that argues the case more directly, and together they form one of the clearest statements of French acting theory before Diderot’s Paradoxe.The volume is illustrated after Charles Eisen, engraved by Emmanuel de Ghendt — the pairing that made Dorat’s books among the most admired of the French eighteenth century.This is a faithful print-on-demand facsimile of the 1767 edition, reproduced in full from a library copy. The historical text is reproduced without modification; only the format, margins and legibility have been reset for modern printing.
